Bird Mite Facts & Information

What do bird mites look like?

  • Body : Bird mites are small, semitransparent, and ovoid in shape. They have hairs on their bodies.
  • Legs : These pests have eight legs.

How long can bird mites live without a host?

Infestations may thrive for some time prior to identification.

Although some bird mites are not selective in choosing a bird host, they remain loyal to and often spend their entire lives on the host they do choose. If a host dies, thousands of mites migrate in search of a new host.

Where do bird mites come from?

Infestations tend to occur during the spring and early summer, when bird nests are plentiful. Bird mites, also called chicken mites, often reside within the nests of their hosts. These nests are commonly found in:

  • Chimneys
  • Eaves
  • Roof spaces
  • Small cracks or cavities in walls
  • Window ledges
