Identification Photo Checklist

Useful identification photographs show context and scale as well as the subject. This checklist does not guarantee an identification and should not be used as a reason to approach, handle, or disturb an unknown animal.

Before taking a photo

• Keep a safe distance and use zoom when necessary.
• Do not handle an unknown animal, disturb a nest, or enter an unsafe space.
• Avoid pesticide exposure, electrical hazards, unstable ladders, traffic, water, and wildlife conflict.
• Remove precise home coordinates and other private information before sharing files publicly.

Scale and file handling

State the unit used and whether size includes legs, wings, tails, or antennae. Keep the original file because aggressive cropping and compression can remove small features. A ruler or familiar object can help only when placing it is safe and does not disturb the subject.

Limitations

Color can change with lighting and cameras. A photograph may not show microscopic or underside features. Similar species can require a specimen, location data, seasonal context, or a qualified identifier.

Use the pest observation worksheet to preserve the context that a photograph cannot show. Report a problem through corrections.
